BRUSSELS. Pressure is mounting for wheat just before Christmas. Corn is not competitive enough for the EU’s feed industry. The lack of clarity over the Trump administration’s biofuel policy is weighing on soybeans. China can hardly wait for the arrival of the Australian rapeseed crop.

Pre-Christmas pressure for wheat

International pressure has mounted on wheat just before Christmas due to the large crops in Argentina and Australia. On top of this, the Rosario Grains Exchange has recently lifted the forecast for Argentina by a further 2.2 million mt to a record 27.7 million mt. In addition, the country has lowered the export tariff for wheat by 2% to 7.5%. Mills in Southeast Asia will also increase imports from Argentina. China’s COFCO has recently purchased 65,000 mt of wheat here.

Europe is also feeling the pressure as competition
