Grains and oilseeds: US soybeans surprisingly defiant

BRUSSELS. Rain has improved conditions for wheat. Ukraine’s corn exports have slumped by 20%. US soybeans are holding up surprisingly well. With the euro hitting a three-and-a-half-year high against the US dollar rapeseed quotations have tumbled.

EU wheat production to climb by 11%

Wheat had a weak start after Easter prompted by US President Donald Trump’s attack on Fed Chief Jerome Powell, which gave rise to further uncertainty. In addition, frequent rainfalls have improved growing conditions in the Mid West in recent days. Rain has also improved conditions in central and northern Europe. SovEcon has also revised the production estimate for wheat upwards by 1.1 million mt to 79.7 million mt for Russia, which is, however, still down on last year’s 81.6 million mt.
