Supported by domestic and international trade activities, local prices of harvest 2016-17 keep on the upper side. Weather forecasts provide support, as well. Remaining stocks are quickly depleted.

The majority of exports goes to EU member countries, as Spain being the leading importer among others. Because of recent droughts in Spain, the country’s output is expected to be lower this year.

Wheat: weather forecasts strengthen prices

SOFIA. Prices of the old crops -- milling wheat and feed wheat -- keep surprisingly high at the start of the new harvesting season. Currently, average purchasing prices of old crop milling wheat stand at about 0.152 EUR/kg EXW Bulgaria while a year earlier at that time, according to the Ministry of Agriculture, the crop was sold at about 0.139 EUR/kg EXW Bulgaria. Forecasts for a drier weather in Western Europe, affecting yield potential of crops and as a consequence total outputs, and speculations over possible higher prices of future contracts strengthened prices.

Domestic and foreign trade activities further support the price

Output 2016-17 has been the highest for a period of more than a decade. Combined with good quality wheat and competitive prices on the international market, exports broke the 4,000,000 mt barrier, currently reaching 4,113,623 mt – the highest export figure within several years. By the 16th of June 2017, remaining stocks stood are 273,413 mt while by the end of the month, the number could well go below 200,000 mt.
