The recent dry weather has allowed farmers to move quicker in harvesting the fields. The forecasted rains could easily prolong the pace of harvest.

SOFIA. According to the Ministry of Agriculture, by the 7th of July 2017, farmers managed to collect wheat only from 19% of available land for harvest, which this year stood at an estimate of 1,100,445 ha. The forecasted showers during the weekend will interrupt the pace of harvest in some regions. Farmers hope heavy showers not to fall since that will definitely influence the quality of the crop, as it did in some regions at the beginning of the month.

Wheat: overall, a better quality crop expected

Agro-meteorological conditions are key for a successful harvest when output and quality of the crop are concerned. After the expected rains during the upcoming weekend, from the middle of next week, dry weather will be prosperous for collecting the crop. So far in the harvesting season, farmers from the North regions have recorded higher yields, and it goes without saying that they expect the quality of the crop to be better than that of last year. At that time of harvest, an estimated national average yield stands at 5.1 mt/ha while that of harvest 2016-17 stood at 4.7 mt/ha.

Local market developments

According to the Ministry of Agriculture, by the end of the first week of July 2017, farmers collected 1,085,704 mt of the crop, as wheat was not yet shipped to EU member countries – the recorded 25,000 mt of exports went to countries from the rest of the world.
