Hazelnut kernels: The TMO is shopping up a storm

ORDU. Approximately two-thirds of the raw nuts currently entering the market are being purchased by the TMO. These also include hazelnuts from the 2016 crop, which as a result may mean price adjustments for mixed products.

 

Mixed product shortages
Food companies are fond of mixing in stocks from previous crops so as to reduce costs when making products such as ground or diced hazelnuts. However, the TMO has changed its purchasing patterns and is now purchasing raw product from last year, which has led some farmers to opt for this route and consequently means that companies producing mixed products must sooner or later switch to fresh nuts that are more expensive.
