ORDU. Recent export data has taken the market by surprise as demand for Turkish hazelnuts is thriving. Meanwhile, the new season is about to start.

Shipments take market by surprise

Shipments have taken market players by surprise with export climbing to 234,000 mt at the end of August. This beats the previous expectations for 2016/17 by far. The exchange rate certainly helped to attract buyers and the sellers could demand satisfactory prices.

Prices may vary

The market is optimistic regarding the new season. Production and quality are good and there should be enough small kernels as well. The farmers are busy and farmgate prices remain stable at 9.25 TRY/kg. Depending on quality and product type prices may, however, vary considerably. The Turkish lira is, in addition, moving towards more stable levels.
