ORDU. Although the Turkish lira has again declined in value, the export prices have been adjusted. Problem are the exporters' trading activities in the raw hazelnut market.

TMO sales expected in May

As raw nut supllies are very much limited, the exporters in Turkey are shifting smaller positions back and forth at comparatively high prices. This has prompted to farmagte prices to rise by TRY 3.50 per kg to TRY 46.50 per kg within days. Although the Turkish Lira has declined to the record low witnessed last summer, the export prices range much higher than the spot market prices in Europe.

Since the prices for the new crop are also based on this level, the buyers are not really interested in purchasing at present. Official production estimates still need to be issued, which renders it difficult to plan ahead for the rest of the season. The risk of frost, however, no longer exists. Further TMO sales are expected at the beginning of May, which ma yadd nominal pressure to the market.

Measures may be eased after Ramadan

Turkey currently has a curfew in place for young people under 20 years of age and for elderly people over 65 years of age. National curfews were, in addition, imposed over the last two weekends. Workers may only apply for special permits in individual cases. The weekend curfews are expected to be maintained over Ramadan, which starts on 23 April. Hope is that the restrictions on public life will gradually be lifted after the Festival of Breaking the Fast.
