ORDU. Valentine’s Day turned very special for Turkish hazelnuts this year. Not only did Ferrero issue a rather curious offer but Turkey also sent special greetings to India.

Special Valentine’s Day greetings

By announcing a purchasing decision for hazelnuts on Valentine’s Day Ferrero has turned active again. The MEWA India exhibition for nuts and dried fruits along with last week’s Gulfood trade fair in Dubai have also left their mark.

India to become new China

Local media attention is certainly centred on India’s market potential for hazelnuts as many exporters are expecting India to be the next China. Exports to China also started small but exceeded 10,000 mt last year and agreement is that India is an important market to watch going ahead.

As media reports highlight exports to India climbed to a record 909 mt in 2024 thereby marking an upsurge of 24% on 2023. The Black Sea Exporters Association has increased market activities in recent months and MEWA India, which was held between 12 and 14 February, was a welcome opportunity to highlight the prominent features of Turkish hazelnuts in cooperation with the Nuts and Dried Fruit Council of India (NDFCI). Reporters were particularly thrilled by chocolate sommelier Zeba Kohli, who is known as India’s chocolate queen, using Turkish hazelnuts to showcase the production stages of hazelnut confectionery and pastry.

Ferrero with little impact

On 14 February, Ferrero in addition started purchasing. Yet, buying is limited to 13-15 mm raw nuts with no quality specifications and no A-B-C quality pricing this time round. Exporters reckon that the purchasing volume will be around 4,500-5,000 mt. Ferrero’s purchasing prices range at TRY 285-290/kg. Yet, the offer has only had a limited impact on the market as it merely promoted raw nut prices to rise to this level. They initially stood at TRY 280/kg for 13-15 mm raw nuts.

Export prices are firm as many suppliers attended the Gulfood in Dubai. Another balancing factor is the continuous depreciation of the Turkish lira. Current demand is normal.
