CANBERRA. Things are looking good for the macadamia industry in terms of production and of consumption. Now, the Australian Macadamia Society has revised its production estimates for 2018.

Production higher than expected in Australia

The Society has revised its in shell production estimates up by 3% to 48,925 mt (3.5% moisture). In shell production with 10% moisture is estimated at 51,000 mt. Initial estimates ranged at 47,500 mt. Production benefitted from consistently favourable weather conditions and the investments in the orchards. The kernel quality is claimed to be very good. Demand for the kernels is strong as a large part of the crop has already been sold in contracts. The outlook for next year is highly encouraging since flowering and nutset are well on their way.

Global production is on the rise

According to the recent estimates published by the International Nut and Dried Fruit Council (INC), global production is set to rise. South Africa has witnessed a record crop of 52,412 mt, of which 65% are to be processed into kernels. The outlook for next year is mixed as much depends on the weather. Production has also surged by 26% in Kenya. The Nut Processors Association of Kenya (NutPak) is confident that plantings will double over the next five years. Soaring farmgate prices have encouraged production.
