Macadamias: looking ahead

ROTTERDAM. Prospects are quite encouraging for macadamias with harvesting about to start in South Africa and Kenya. Yet, competition from China is fierce and uncertainty persists about Trump’s proposed tariffs. Offers for the 2025 crop are available in Europe.

South Africa

While final crop estimates for 2024 still need to be issued, early signs for this year’s crop are highly encouraging. Harvesting will start in March. In May, projections stood at 92,000 mt and Macadamias South Africa (SAMAC) will issue the final figures soon. Traders report that prospects are highly encouraging for the 2025 crop and current estimates predict a crop 10% larger than last year.

Exporters are, however, reluctant to start issuing offers at present as they sense that demand will again be very strong in China. In addition, there
