OTTAWA/BRUSSELS. Canada's mustard seed yields are at their highest level since 2020. However, as the acreage is 40% smaller than last year, the higher yield is not reflected in higher production figures.

Smaller acreage reduces potential

Contrary to other estimates, the yield forecast for the 2025 Canadian mustard seed crop remained at 0.966 mt/ha in the current report from Statistics Canada. This result would already be above average and would correspond to the highest crop yield since 2020 (0.987 mt/ha). By contrast, the 10-year average (2014-2024) is only 0.859 mt/ha, and the 5-year average (2020-2024) is only 0.750 mt/ha due to significant crop damage in some areas. However, due to a significantly smaller acreage this year, the production result is only 139,802 mt. Due to the extreme crop losses in 2020 and 2021, the 5-year average is only 137,064 mt, whereas the 10-year average was still 152,011 mt.

According to the latest report from Rayglen Commodities, brown mustard seeds are currently being offered in Canada at a level of CAD 0.38/lb FOB farm, while prices for golden mustard seeds are CAD 0.41-0.43/lb.

Canada increases shipments to the EU

Mustard seed imports into the EU started the new season at record levels. Although imports have declined somewhat in recent weeks, they remain at a high level. According to data from the European Commission, a total of 41,626 mt of mustard seeds were imported from third countries between 1 July and 7 December 2025, which is 23.3% more than at the same time last year. The import value for the above-mentioned period amounted to EUR 24.748 million (-8.8%), while the average import price fell by 26.3% to EUR 0.59/kg compared to the same period last year.

This is partly due to imports from Brazil, which were recorded in the first month of the new season but have since stagnated. In addition, shipments from Canada are down 3.6% on last year to 11,453 mt. Although imports from Russia are also up 182.4% year-on-year to 8,629 mt, the country was the most important supplier until import duties were imposed on Russian agricultural products entering the EU. Meanwhile, shipments from Ukraine have fallen by 43.6% to 8,365 mt.

The most important customer within the EU is currently Belgium, which increased its imports by a whopping 212.6% year-on-year to 15,100 mt. Poland's imports also increased by 23.2% to 9,230 mt, while Germany imported 9,630 mt, a good 15% less mustard seeds.
