Peanuts: farmers call for support

NEW DELHI. Indian peanut growers are currently facing a number of difficulties, including oversupplied spot markets and financial problems. They are calling for more help from the government. As a result, prices have only recovered slightly.

Higher compensation demanded

The peanut market is currently only slightly stronger, but is largely stagnating. The main reason for this is the tense situation facing farmers: spot markets are oversupplied, meaning that growers sometimes have to wait three to four days before they can deliver. At the same time, the prices offered by traders are well below the minimum support price. The reason for this is that 70-80% of the goods delivered come from batches rejected by the government or surplus goods – an argument for traders to push down prices.
