AUSTIN/MEXICO CITY. Production in Mexico is set to decline by 10-15% over last year. High carry-over stocks should, however, provide some compensation for supplies.

Carry-overs compensate for decline

This year's US production is estimated at 115,000 to 120,000 metric tonnes. During the INC Congress at the end of May, production estimates still ranged at 130,000 metric tonnes. Production is also expected to decline by 10-15% in Mexico. The INC anticipates a prodcution of 123,000 to 130,000 metric tonnes, whereas prodcution ranged higher at 145,500 metric tonnes in 2018/2019. Anderson Exports is reckoning with global carry-overs of 95,250 metric tonnes. Since this is over 20,000 metric tonnes more than usual, supplies should suffice to meet demand int eh itnernational market.

Imports from the US on the rise

From January to the end of June, Germany impoerted 2,587 metric tonnes of US pecans. In the first six months of last year, imports ranged lower at 2,194 metric tonnes. At the same time, imports from Mexico declined from 66 metric tonnes to 54 metric tonnes. South Africa also functions as an important supplier for Germany. The main season is, however, only just beginning here. The prices for the new US crop will be issued over the next few weeks. In Europe JMH pecans from the 2018 crop in the US are currently trading for EUR 11.13 per kg FCA Poland.
