Pine nuts: EU imports slightly above last year's level

BRUSSELS/TOMSK. EU countries maintained their pine nut imports in 2025 at a similar level to last year. Global production, however, declined by around 28%.

EU imports show slight increase

In 2025, a total of 9,655 mt of pine nuts worth EUR 174.322 million were imported into the EU from third countries. This represents a 2.1% increase in import volume year-on-year, while the import value rose by as much as 6.7%. The average import price during this period was EUR 18.06/kg, which was around 4.6% above the previous year's level.

Shipments from China increased by 12.2% to 8,116 mt compared to the same period last year, accounting for a good 84% of total EU imports. The EU also increased its imports from Mongolia (+168.3% to 322 mt) and Afghanistan (+693.3% to 119 mt). In contrast, imports from Turkey and Russia fell by 43.0% to 538 mt and 55.8% to 424 mt respectively. The main importers in the EU are Germany (+11.2% to 4,680 mt), Italy (+9.7% to 1,580 mt) and the Netherlands (-8.7% to 677 mt).

Global crop down by 28%

The report published in November by the International Nut and Dried Fruit Council estimates the global crop for 2025/2026 at 126,490 mt of inshell pine nuts, which is almost 28% less than in the previous year. Among other things, the yield in China declined by 44% to 62,400 mt, while 18,000 mt (+20%) were harvested in Russia. In the Mediterranean region, Turkey in particular recorded a noticeable increase of 39.4% to 7,600 mt, while countries such as Italy, Portugal and Spain had significantly lower crops than in the previous year.

Siberian exports have increased

According to the Russian regional news agency RIA Tomsk, three Siberian regions under the supervision of Rosselkhoznadzor exported a total of 1,403 mt of pine nuts to around 16 countries in 2025. With an export volume of 1,300 mt, Tomsk Oblast is by far the most important export region. The majority of shipments, 981 mt, went to China, with other buyer countries including Kazakhstan, the Czech Republic, Serbia and Belarus. Around 88 mt of exports were shipped by the Novosibirsk region, where the main buyer countries were Kazakhstan, Belarus, Kyrgyzstan, Moldova and Germany.
