Pistachios: Enormous challenges in Iran

TEHRAN/SACRAMENTO/ISTANBUL. After last season's setbacks, the production prospects are much more encouraging in Iran. Exporters are, however, confronted with many new directives and financial difficulties, which render the market extremely difficult.

Exporters in Iran face major challenges

After unfavourable weather conditions caused massive crop damages last year, market players report that this year's crop is in a much better condition. Trade, however, face problems with financial transactions, exchange rate fluctuations and under-financing as well as many new directives. Many have even decided to refrain from exporting pistachios.

Normally an average of 60% of the production from Iran is exported. Last year, however, exports only amounted to 48% of the total stocks of 87,000 mt. This was mainly due to
