Pistachios: much is at stake

TEHRAN/BRUSSELS. For suppliers in Iran the EU import ban for pistachios seems imminent. The EU has rejected as many as 35 shipments from Iran due to aflatoxin this year so far. Pistachios are in high demand, and much is a stake for the industry.

Several warnings ignored

With the market on edge over a possible EU import ban for pistachios over aflatoxin suppliers are confronted with a highly worrying situation. They confirm that the EU has granted industry representatives a six-month grace period to resolve quality issues. The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) has issued several warnings regarding Iranian pistachios with letters being sent to the Iranian Ministry of Agriculture stating that imports may be banned around a year ago already.
