Pistachios: Trade war and surge in demand

BRUSSELS. Exporters in California are greatly concerned over developments in China. The government has increased import duties for US pistachios. Demand in Europe has recovered, and the price trend may be taking the decisive turn in Iran.

 

Dispute with China is starting to escalate

President Trumps intentions of raising import duties on steel and aluminum imported from China has prompted the Chinese government to announce an import duty of 15% for US pistachios. It is unclear if this newly proposed import duty is to be charged on top of already existing duties or if existing duties are to be increased to 15%. Currently an import duty of 5% is charged for raw pistachios from the US and 10% for roasted pistachios. These already existing tariffs have, however, so far failed to put off buye
