SACRAMENTO/SANTIAGO. This season's decline in global prune production is having a notable impact on Chile. Especially since production is not only down in the US, but also in other producing countries.

Production declines further

Although the International Nut and Dried Fruit Council already anticipated an 11% decline in global production to 185,694 mt in August, this figure may well prove too optimistic. Market players reckon that production will only range at 32,000-35,000 mt in France, well short of the initially anticipated 40,000 mt. California prunes also expects production to range 37% lower than last year at 45,000 mt. Carry-over stocks should, however, enable the market to meet demand in California.
