Pistachios: US fails to keep up with Iran

TEHRAN/SACRAMENTO. After US sanctions dealt Iran’s pistachio market a heavy blow in 2018, exports have certainly revived now. Iran shipped a record volume of 38,518 mt overseas in November. Although US exports also surged in November, they only range nominally higher than the volumes shipped from Iran.

Recovery in exports from Iran

According to official customs statistics Iran exported a total of 63,668 mt of pistachios between 22 September 2020 and 20 November 2020. This is a 113% rise on the 29,856 mt shipped overseas in the same period in 2019. As much as 42,260 mt or 66% of all exports were destined to the Far East. Exports have been strong this season so far as firm domestic market prices and exchange rate fluctuations enable suppliers to offer highly competitive prices.
