Dates: exports strangely at odds with domestic demand

TEHRAN. Domestic and export demand are at odds for dates in Iran. Market players are, nevertheless, confident that they will profit from the coronavirus crisis. Preparation is underway for Ramadan, which starts on 12 April.

Assumptions fuel appetite for dates

Evidence shows that the consumption of dates has declined in Iran’s domestic market since the coronavirus struck. Hopes are, however, been voiced that domestic demand will recover in 2021 as the virus is brought under better control. Exports have, by contrast, risen. Overseas shipments have climbed by around 10% between 20 March and 20 November 2020 as compared with the same period in 2019.
