TEHRAN. Although a lack of proficiency renders it difficult for exporters in Iran to compete in the international market for dates, there is one decisive advantage suppliers can draw on. Shipments to Russia are gaining momentum. With Ramadan about to start on 12 April the market has experienced a surprising twist.

Competing for market shares in Russia

Target markets for dates largely depend on the type of product. Buyers in Russia, for instance, prefer to buy Estamaran and Kabkab dates in Iran, which are mainly used to manufacture cakes and confectionaries. Other popular date varieties are, however, purchased in Tunisia, Algeria and Israel and Saudi Arabia. The dates supplied by these producing countries are of higher quality in terms of packaging and sorting, whereas producers and traders in Iran lack the sufficient support necessary to improve the quality of exports.
