Peanuts: farmgate prices in the US rise significantly

ATLANTA. In a year-on-year comparison, farmers are charging significantly more for their raw peanuts this season - the reason being good prices for corn and cotton, which offer attractive cultivation alternatives.

The US peanut market is currently very quiet, as buyers are still waiting for concrete information on the quality and quantity of the new crop. In March, the USDA had expected a very large crop volume of just under 2.8 million mt, but even then there were fears of a reduction in acreage. Rumours are growing that farmers have increasingly switched to other products such as corn and cotton, with which they can achieve higher prices.
