HANOI. While production is set to decline in Vietnam, prospects are much more encouraging in Western Africa. Shipping cashew nuts overseas is, however, a challenge. As India is struggling with the pandemic, there is little hope that exports will revive this year.

Production set to decline in Vietnam

Although production is expected to be good in Cambodia, the situation is different in Vietnam, where production may range 20-30% lower than anticipated. Issue is that strong rain has caused severe damage and disrupted drying. Prospects are, by contrast, highly encouraging in Western Africa as most producing countries are reckoning with an average or very good crop. Harvesting has nearly been completed in Côte d'Ivoire and is about to start in Guinea-Bissau, the Gambia and Senegal, where estimates are promising.
