Sesame seeds: supplies of hulled seeds may run low

NEW-DELHI/MAPUTO. Cyclone Tauktae, which hit India two weeks ago, is estimated to have only damaged around 10% of the sesame seed crop. Market players had initially reckoned with more extensive damages. Production prospects are, in fact, highly encouraging.

The summer crop is expected to exceed 100,000 mt by far and some estimates even range at 150,000 mt. Although South Korea has issued a tender for June, demand is rather subdued in China and in Europe. Shipments to Europe have declined sharply since last year prompted by the ethylene oxide scandal. Prices have slumped in India and additional imports from producing countries in Africa are not required. Export prices also remain low.
