The market sets a price for the new crop of about 0.125-0.128 EUR/kg EXW Bulgaria. Farmers, driven by the profit motif, willing to reconsider their future cultivation strategies.

Prices: old crop vs. new crop

SOFIA. Purchasing average prices of harvest 2016-17 last week stood at about 0.142 EUR/kg EXW Bulgaria. During the recent months, prices have been following an upward trajectory even though remaining stocks were high; according to the Ministry of Agriculture, by the middle of the month, remaining quantities stood at 33,712 mt. For some months, barley has been traded on the domestic market.

While in the midst of the new harvest, farmers are already discontented with what the market demands as prices of barley; currently, prices hover around 0.125-0.128 EUR/kg EXW Bulgaria, depending on the region. Some farmers refuse to sell since prices seem outrageously low. That is the main reason why this year available for harvest acreages stand by 20.5% lower than those of the previous year. Output last year was close to 697,800 mt.

The profit motif compels farmers to cultivate crops such as wheat and rapeseed since these crops command higher prices and foreign demands keep on increasing with each subsequent year. Even though barley harvest was belated because of weather conditions and the forecasted aggregate output will be lower, prices of the new crop started quite low.
