Wheat: the time for harvest on a mass scale approaches

SOFIA. Although the harvesting season was officially opened in the middle of the month, because of recent weather conditions, wheat harvest activities in the South and North regions were belated this season. By that time last year, farmers were already harvesting the fields. Anyhow, farmers from the South plan on entering the fields this week while those of the North are setting their plans for the beginning of July.

According to the Ministry of Agriculture, on a national level, available for harvest acreages stand at 1,100,492 ha, which is about 2.6% less than those of the previous season. Expectations are for a prosperous harvest with an aggregate output to hover around 5,200,000 mt. Output of harvest 2016-17 stood at 5,662,721 mt.

Prices are expected to start lower

Although domestic and foreign demands have supported the price recently, at the beginning of the marketing season, farmers expect lower starting prices for the new crops. Prices of milling wheat are forecasted to move around 0.138 – 0.140 EUR/kg EXW Bulgaria while prices of feed wheat to settle around 0.133 EUR/kg EXW Bulgaria. The quality of the crop will also weigh heavily on regional prices.
