Pushing aside the devastating impacts from the recent hailstorms in some areas, farmers from the North regions are already estimating higher average yields than those of last years.

SOFIA. On a national level this year, farmers are harvesting 1,100,485 ha of wheat fields, as the majority cultivated land is situated in the North regions. According to the Ministry of Agriculture, this year’s output is projected to be around 5,200,000 mt, although the estimate was drawn before the impact of the recent hailstorms; the storms were confined to specific areas, but without doubt, their impacts will affect regional outputs, and most certainly, the quality of the crop! However, for the upcoming week, the weather is forecasted to be mainly dry, with occasional rains in parts of the country.

Wheat: yield potential picked up strong so far in the harvest

Every year, the North regions in the country realize the highest output of wheat, with the Northeast region – the so called Golden Granary of Bulgaria – leading among the rest not only by the largest realized outputs, but also by the highest quality of the crops. As harvest was conducted, by the end of June 2017 according to the Ministry of Agriculture, estimated aggregate yield stood at 5.23 mt/ha while its counterpart from the previous season stood at 4.7 mt/ha.

It is too early to predict the final results, since harvest will most probably continue on for at least two more weeks, but although this year’s output will be less because of lower planted acreages, yield is expected to be higher in the majority of regions because of auspicious weather conditions during the Spring. For instance, in some regions, yields stood at 6.2 mt/ha while in others - at 4.0 mt/ha. Yet, the lower yields come from regions that contribute the smallest parts of the national output.
