More than 210,000 mt of prunes
According to preliminary estimates for the 2026/27 prune season, production is expected to rise slightly year-on-year. During the International Nut and Dried Fruit Council’s congress in Macao last month, a global production of 211,580 mt was forecast, which would represent a slight increase on the 207,560 mt recorded in the 2025/26 season; this was stated by the experts at Cardassilaris in their latest report. Together with the carry-over stocks of 76,850 mt from the current season, a total of 288,430 mt of prunes would be available for the 2026/27 marketing year.
At 83,000 mt, Chile is expected to account for just under 40% of production. According to current estimates, French prune production is set to reach 32,000 mt, whilst in Argentina a significant drop in production to 15,000 mt is anticipated.
US prune production is forecast to reach 68,000 mt, accounting for around a third of total production. The unsettled weather in the Californian growing regions between January and March had initially raised concerns about fruit size, as sufficient chill hours had provided ideal conditions for strong flowering. However, as industry experts reported, the unusually warm weather that followed – which would have accelerated the ripening process – lasted only a short time. At a recent industry meeting, it was confirmed that no problems are expected for this year’s crop.

Availability under close observation
Cardassilaris points out, however, that buyers should keep a close eye on the market when it comes to their individual requirements. Experts do not therefore anticipate a general shortage, but it should be borne in mind that some varieties and sizes are only available in limited quantities.
Chilean Elliott prunes were most recently traded on the European spot market at EUR 3,340/mt FCA Poland, whilst Ashlock prunes, 70/80 were trading at EUR 3,690/mt EXW Poland.
