NEW DELHI. Indian farmers have grown less psyllium. Adverse weather conditions have further reduced yields. New regulations in the Indian organic sector are causing delays.

Lower prices despite a crop decline

Unfavourable weather conditions and a smaller acreage in India caused prices for psyllium and psyllium husks to rise in Q1 of 2026. Production had already fallen by an estimated 20-30% in 2025 due to heavy rainfall and hail. Thanks to carry-over stocks from the previous year, however, there was still sufficient supply on the market, as reported by experts at Abbott Blackstone International. Between June 2025 and December 2025, prices for psyllium husks, 99%, had fallen from around USD 8,720/mt FOB Mundra to USD 7,750/mt.

In March, Abbott Blackstone International reported that production in India had fallen by around 20% due to low price levels; in June 2024, prices for psyllium husks (99%) stood at around USD 10,200/mt FOB, and in December 2024 they were still at USD 9,400/mt FOB Mundra. Furthermore, above-average temperatures and unexpected rainfall, followed by a sudden drop in temperature during the plants’ development phase, had affected yields. The loss is estimated at 10%. Consequently, prices had risen again to USD 8,150/mt FOB in March 2025, but were quoted at a significantly lower USD 7,850/mt in May.

APEDA extends deadline for organic certification

In its latest report, Abbott Blackstone International stated that a new regulation introduced by the Indian organic certification body APEDA could lead to delivery delays and shortages of organic psyllium husks. Unlike previously, not only producer groups but also every individual smallholder is now required to register. The report states that the implementation poses challenges for the economic circumstances of many farms as well as the entire supply chain for organic psyllium husks, which is why the deadline for verification has now been extended for the second time. The new deadline is 3 July 2026. Although goods are generally available, the pending verification of organic certificates is causing delays in the processing of transactions.
