Pumpkin seed kernels: Buyers need to prepare for horrific prices

DALIAN. Once again, the Chinese pumpkin seed market is characterised by extreme contradictions that are difficult to understand.

While rumours about smaller acreages were dismissed as being exaggerated last week, they are now supposed to be the reason why traders are stocking up on pumpkin seeds again.

Traders do not want to go back

Increased trading has caused prices to rise mainly for later delivery dates. Prompt shipments are, however, still possible at last week’s lower levels.

Disregarding the general record prices of the last two years, a price increase later in the season is actually nothing unusual. In the next few months, buyers will surely have to be prepared for one or the other horror story, until a better estimation of the 2017 crop is possible. Many suppliers consider the current price level to be too low, but they also have to adapt to the demand as long as there are enough products on the market.
