DALIAN. A few weeks ago, reports about 40-50% smaller acreages in 2017/18 prompted a rise in prices. The first traders are now expressing doubt.

The gossip factory is buzzing
In March 2017, the prices for Chinese pumpkin seeds dropped to an eleven-year low, which caused many traders to sell at a loss. Then the first predictions were made for the pumpkin seed production of 2017. Based on the sales of seed, market players were assuming that the acreages would be 40-50% smaller than last year. This information was enough to arouse the interest of the buyers and the prices rose steadily. Depending on the supplier, the offers range between 2,000-2,200 USD/mt for Grade A and 2,400-2,600 USD/mt for Grade AA seeds.

Meanwhile, however, the first Chinese traders are appearing who seem to assess the market differently. In their opinion, the acreages should not be much smaller than in 2016. It seems that exporters are spreading this rumour to get rid of their old stocks and to impose a higher price level. If this should be the case, their tactic was a full success until now.

The Chinese pumpkin seed market never was known for its high transparency, but the other side is also reporting that due to lacking alternatives, at least the farmers in Inner Mongolia are sowing similar areas with pumpkin seeds as last year. Also in northeast China, a comparable area or only slightly smaller area is expected.
