DALIAN. The current situation on the Chinese pumpkin seed market promises a turbulent season for 2017/18.

This year, many farmers are switching to subsidised agricultural products such as cotton and soybean, resulting in smaller acreages for pumpkin seeds. The low prices in the current season are making the product uninteresting for the farmers.

Upward trend

The prospect of 30-50% smaller acreages and corresponding low production volumes are putting Chinese processors and traders in the pleasant situation of raising the prices considerably.

Free positions are only still available to a limited extent. Traders are not missing the opportunity to correct the prices upwards on a weekly basis and are on a straight path towards reaching the same level as last year. Lower prices are not to be expected for now.

Borderline experience

The most important thing now is the crop development in the next few weeks. If in addition to the smaller acreage, there are also crop losses due to weather conditions, the prices could rise significantly. However, the level to which buyers are willing to play along remains to be seen.
