DALIAN. Buyers can hardly resist below-market price offers. Several suppliers in China are, however, taking extremely high risks.

Suppliers adopt different strategies

The suppliers are adopting different strategies. Most of them are afraid of operating at a loss when concluding long-term contracts, which is translated into rising prices. To strengthen their position on the market and to outpace the competition, a few traders are still taking the risk of offering below market prices. The buyers are pouncing on the lower-priced offers. It still remains to be seen if this strategy has paid off for the suppliers.

Hopes are fading

Due to the lack of official surveys, the crop volume, availability and remaining stocks on the pumpkin seed market can only be estimated more or less accurately. Even if there is still no agreement, meanwhile more and more suppliers are tending to say that the acreage could be about 40% smaller this year. However, thanks to the good 2016 crop, there should still be enough stocks available on the market to prevent rapid jumps in prices. Nevertheless, the long-term trend is seen as rising.
