Rapeseed: Planting Winter rapeseed under a cursed sky

SOFIA. The optimal period for planting the crop is reaching its end. However, the lack of necessary precipitation disfavors the recently planted crops.

SOFIA. By the end of last week, farmers planted 23,611 ha of Winter rapeseed. However, many farmers throughout the country – not only those from the general South regions – complain of dry weather conditions before and after planting. Some expect the recently planted crops to dry out due to lack of precipitation. In addition, farmers are actually at the end of the optimal period for planting Winter rapeseed.

Rapeseed: not fully realized dreams

The final estimates of the Ministry of Agriculture place aggregate output this year at 459,002 mt, which is about 7% lower than national production from last year. The reasons for the lower output are the weaker realized yield this year – 2.85 mt/ha and lower harvested acreages.

Harvested acreages lagged by 4% on a yearly basis, standing at 161,099 ha, although last year farmers planted 186,167 ha of rapeseed. The high export demand of the crop in recent years encouraged farmers to cultivate larger land plots. However, the difference between planted and harvested areas could be accounted for as fallen-through acreages because of adverse weather conditions during the year.
