SOFIA. Standing still, rapeseed exporters could not fend off competitive pressure. Planting of Winter rapeseed continues.

BULGARIA. By the end of last week, farmers sowed 115,309 ha of Winter rapeseed, which on a year-to-year basis lags behind by close to 3% of planted acreages. Depending on the region, some farmers benefited from the high precipitation in the end of last month.

Rapeseed: Regional competition has always mattered

Slower have been export activities so far in the season. Rapeseed is mainly exported to foreign markets and, as has been the case in previous years, the majority of stocks are usually depleted by that time of the season. Yet, competitive pressure from the bigger producers and exporters of the crop within the Black sea region exerts pressure on local prices, which in turn influence exports. Farmers sold out long time ago, leaving the intricacies of the unpredictable market to exporters. Domestic consumption is small on a yearly basis.

By the end of last week, via Varna seaport went out 133,597 mt of rapeseed, according to local authorities, as the figure represents a decrease of 26.5% on a yearly basis. Local rapeseed is usually traded lower than rapeseed with Ukrainian origin, but pushing prices even further down will be of no use. The current tiresome market sentiments will most probably prevail during the medium-term.
