Findings in Mesopotamia dated back to more than 4,000 years ago suggest that sesame is one of the world's oldest oil crops.

Sesame has its origins in parts of Africa as well as in India. The seeds were pressed into oil and (roasted) to season foods or to add flavour to baked goods. Other methods of preparation include halva (ground sesame with sugar or honey) and tahini (sesame paste). Sesame bars, consisting of sesame seeds and sugar or honey, are also a popular snack.
