Sesame seeds: further disruptions anticipated in Africa

NEW DELHI/NIAMEY. As tensions are intensifying in Niger, Sudan and Ethiopia trading is largely disrupted for sesame seeds. Prices have declined a bit in India.

Divided opinions

Although further nominal price declines are being reported in India, price levels are still relatively high. Opinions are divided as to what way the marekt will turn. Most expect further rises due to the troubles in several producing countries in Africa, which are limiting exports. Supplies are also running low in Tanzania and Mozambique. In India many growers in Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan have also switched to peanuts, which is reducing sowing. These supply queezes may certainly drive up prices.
