Sesame seeds: harvest almost complete in Chad

NEW DELHI/TOKYO. In India, the sesame seed market is currently rather sluggish, while Japanese imports are impressive. In Chad, meanwhile, the harvest is drawing to a close.

Demand lower than hoped for

After receiving a slight boost in November, Indian sesame seed prices fell in December. Demand did not pick up to the extent hoped for and market experts believe that this lean period could continue for a few more weeks. In India, winter temperatures did not set in until late, which also had a negative impact on domestic demand. Exporters also report that buying interest from overseas for both hulled and unhulled sesame seeds is much lower than expected.
