NEW DELHI. Sesame seed harvesting is underway in India. First arrivals are expected in mid-October. Confusion, meanwhile, prevails over ethylene oxide and sesame seeds in Germany as products have been recalled.

Harvest starts amid subdued demand

Despite regular reports of heavy rains, production should be rather good in main growing regions such as Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh. Farmers are busy harvesting the first seeds and the first arrivals are expected by mid/end of October.

Weak international demand is prompting firm prices and nominal declines, a trend that is to continue for some time. Hulled sesame seeds with a 99.95% purity are trading at USD 1.55/kg CIF Hamburg and black sesame seeds at a much lower USD 2.28/kg CIF Hamburg.
