GUJARAT. Rain has saved the day for many crops including peanuts, sesame seeds and castor, cotton and moong in the state of Gujarat in India. Farmers have completed sowing.

Rain brings relief in Gujarat

After around a month of only scattered showers, continuous rain finally arrived during the Janmashtami festival on 15 August. While there are reports of limited damage in areas with heavy rainfall, the general impression is that the rains have saved agriculture. Crops such as peanuts, sesame seeds and castor, cotton, moong (mung beans) and urad have benefitted. Farmers stopped irrigation immediately.

Sowing slightly down

In fact, farmers have completed sowing the main crops in Gujarat with kharif crops sown on 7.8 million ha. This is a bit lower than the 7.923 million ha sown in the previous season. While the sowing of cotton, sesame and soybeans as well as pulses and cereals has decreased, peanut sowing has increased. Farmers are still busy sowing castor, but there has been a big rise here with sowing completed on 447,000 ha against last year’s 332,000 ha. Although continuous rain was harmful for several crops including castor in North Gujarat, this no longer is a problem.

Sesame cultivation stands 16% lower at 40,077 ha in Gujarat. Whereas farmers had to water crops such as peanuts and cotton once or twice as the seedlings started to dry up because of continuous heat, the rain has now brought relief. Farmers state that pests are not a problem at present and that the crop is blooming and growing well. The peanut plants are around two months old carrying flowers and buds.
