NEW DELHI/ABUJA. Seasonal demand is expected to cause prices on the Indian sesame seed market to rise again after a long time. Persistent rainfall is causing delays in harvesting in Nigeria.

Prices expected to rise

Since the beginning of the year, prices for Indian sesame seeds have fallen by 15-18% at origin. However, market players expect prices to rise again soon. Demand in the domestic market is highest during the winter months. In addition, there are regular export enquiries from important overseas buyers. Given that the Kharif crop has lower yields due to unfavourable weather conditions, a price increase is quite conceivable. The extent of this remains to be seen, as prices on the international market are already lower than those offered in India.
