Sesame seeds: surprising developments

NEW DELHI. Although extreme heat and drought just before harvesting must have impacted quality, quite the opposite appears to be the case in India. Some traders even state that the quality of the sesame seeds is, in fact, superior.

Firm export prices

The new crop is certainly arriving in the local markets and weekly arrivals presently range at 4,380 mt. At 3,592 mt Gujarat supplied the lion's share of these volumes. Suppliers not only report that sufficient volumes of black and white seeds are available but also that yields are up in West Bengal as acreage has risen here. This state, however, mainly supplies brown seeds that are pressed into oil rather than being hulled.
