MANISA. Due to the lack of official predictions, varying estimations for the new crop are circulating on the Turkish sultanas market. Although they are supposed to be "good” altogether, but compared to what?

Disagreement on the market
The vines are not capable of high performance every year, and after the good crop last year, a bit of recovery is needed in 2017. In terms of quality, a good grape crop is still expected, but with a smaller yield per hectare. According to the traders, this year's crop could bring about 280,000 mt of sultanas, compared to 300,000 mt last year.

However, market players have strongly differing opinions regarding the surplus stocks from the 2016/17 season. The expectations range from "no surpluses" to 50,000 mt surplus.

Desired price level
The prices are still stable, but a slight increase is possible starting next week. The ultimate sultana production also depends on table grape exports, where Turkish suppliers are hoping for a strong demand from Russia.

The government only purchased 1,250 mt of sultanas for schools this season. It is expected to reach 5,000 mt in the 2017/18 season. In the last few years, the project was always announced to be much more extensive than it actually was. Traders assume that this aims to achieve a higher export price level, since the sultanas are also in demand on the domestic market.
