Sultanas: Supply squeeze on the horizon

MANISA. Economic chaos reigns in Turkey. Food prices have increased by 40-50%. Credit loans are getting more and more expensive. In addition, traders on the sultana market are warning of shortages.

 

Threatening shortage

Market players reckon that there is a risk of a supply squeeze. Accordingly, Turkey consumed and exported 320,000 mt of dried grapes last year. The carry-over supplies are small, therefore only 260,000 mt are available this season. Exports to Russia are a decisive factor. Turkey shipped considerably more fresh grapes to Russia thereby reducing supplies that could be processed into dried fruit. Exporters are forecasting massive price surges as of January at the latest.
