Sunflower seeds: disrupted start to the new season

SOFIA. Low yields are frequently being reported and panic is spreading in the sunflower seed market. Traders, however, advise marekt players to remain calm and wait.

Yields slashed by half in some parts of Bulgaria

Media reports state that although the harvest is progressing well, yields are considerably lower than usual in some regions. In Dobruja, for instance, the border region between south-eastern Romania and northeastern Bulgaria, yields average at 1.34 mt/ha, whereas yields stood at 2.63 mt/ha last year. The situation in other parts of northeastern Bulgaria is, by contrast, much better. In the Rasgrad Province, average yields currently range at 2.1 mt/ha, compared to 2.55 mt/ha last year.
