Sunflower seeds: doubts about optimistic EU forecasts

SOFIA. In its latest report, the European Commission has once again raised its estimates for the EU sunflower seed crop in 2021. However, uncertainty is spreading among market players in Bulgaria.

Heat reduces yields

For a long time, the outlook for the Bulgarian sunflower seed market was optimistic, there had been sufficient rainfall and the crops were developing well. Recently, however, uncertainty has spread among market players. While the crop is doing well in parts of the country, other growing regions are affected by drought and heat. Market players therefore fear that yields here could be significantly lower than hoped.
