Sunflower seeds: EU crop forecast falls below 10 million mt

SOFIA/KYIV. The estimates for EU sunflower seed production continue to be reduced. According to Eurostat, the crop in Bulgaria alone declined by a quarter year-on-year, while France became the top producer.

Lead over last year is shrinking

The European Commission has once again reduced its estimates for the 2023 EU sunflower seed crop in its October report, with production now expected to be less than 10 million mt. In September, the forecast was still just under 10.5 million mt; with a crop of 9.953 million mt, the difference compared to last year would be almost 5% - but this would still be 7% more than the 9.302 million mt produced last year.

According to the latest data, France is the largest sunflower seed producer in the EU this year with 2.17 million mt,
