Sunflower seeds: global production to decline by 16%

SOFIA/KYIV. After the record crop in 2021, the US Department of Agriculture expects global sunflower seed production to fall below 50 million mt again in the 2022/2023 season. The outlook within the EU and for Argentina is promising.

Positive outlook for EU crop

Eurostat has revised the estimates for EU sunflower seed production in 2022 to 11.14 million mt. With the exception of France, production is expected to increase in all major EU growing countries this year. Romania is forecast to harvest 3.38 million mt, almost 20% more than last year, and Hungary is also expected to increase production by 17% to 2.06 million mt. At the same time, Bulgaria's sunflower seed crop could be up 3% year-on-year, whereas France's deficit is expected to be just as large.
