Sunflower seeds: harvesting starts early in Bulgaria

SOFIA/KYIV. Harvesting started in Bulgaria this week, but the kernels do not yet meet expectations in terms of quality. Ukraine has reportedly increased sowing for high oleic sunflower seeds.

Small kernels

Although the high temperatures in Bulgaria are not quite as good for yields, they have enabled farmers to start harvesting a bit earlier than usual. The sunflowers as such may in general have a good appearance, yet farmers are reckoning with many so-called "heat seeds" at the start of the harvest. Because of the heat these seeds contain smaller than average kernels. Hope is that the kernels will turn out bigger as the harvest progresses in two to three weeks.
