Sunflower seeds: high demand drives market

SOFIA/KYIV. Harvesting has nearly been completed in Ukraine, whereas sunflowers are still standing in large areas in Kazakhstan. Rising oil prices are also driving up the market for sunflower seeds in Bulgaria.

26% still to be harvested

As the Ministry of Agrarian Policy and Food of Ukraine states harvesting has been completed on 4.950 million ha or 98% of the area sown. Average yields range at 23.4 mt/ha and production is estimated at 11.596 million mt. In Kazakhstan, harvesting is still underway and has been completed on 854,700 ha or 74% of the area sown. Production estimates stand at 943,200 mt.
